Gradually, it opened more stores and became popular as a discount grocery chain. Since 1989, Penny has been operating by Rewe Group. Penny also has branches in five other European countries. During the 1990s, the Rewe Group started expanding Penny outside Germany which includes Italy, Austria, Romania, Czech Republic, and Hungary.
